Finasteride is a 5α-reductase inhibitor thus it is an antiandrogen. It reduces the production of a male sex hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in some parts of the body like scalp and prostate glands.

Finasteride is commercially known by its brand name Proscar or Propecia, is a medicine that helps to treat enlarged prostate gland or scalp hair loss in males. It can be also used to treat excessive hair growth in females. It is a white crystalline powder having the melting point about 250°C. It is highly soluble in chloroform and in other lower alcohol solvents available. But it is insoluble in water.

The PROSCAR tablets are available for oral consumption and are film-coated containing 5 mg of finasteride and other inactive ingredients like microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, magnesium stearate, FD&C Blue 2 Aluminum Lake, hydroxypropyl cellulose LF, hydrous lactose, sodium starch glycolate, titanium dioxide, yellow iron oxide, Docusate sodium, methylcellulose and talc.
